Christchurch has a very different character from many of the inland Dorset towns we cover. The historic centre around Christchurch Priory, High Street, Church Street and the Quay sits alongside riverside neighbourhoods, established suburban roads and coastal areas stretching towards Mudeford. There is also a considerable mixture of building ages, from historic cottages and town-centre properties to twentieth-century family homes and newer developments. The Christchurch Central Conservation Area was first designated in 1969, while several other conservation areas lie around the wider town, including Purewell, Stanpit and Fisherman's Bank, Mudeford Quay and Wick Village.
That variety is why we do not approach composite doors in Christchurch as a one-design-fits-all product. A simple panelled entrance in a traditional colour may work beautifully on an older property near the centre, while a house further out towards Highcliffe or Mudeford might suit a cleaner contemporary door with slim glazing and modern hardware. Christchurch's historic character deserves consideration when exterior changes are being planned. BCP Council lists Christchurch Central as a conservation area alongside other designated areas throughout the locality and advises that development or alterations within conservation areas should respect their special character. The council also notes that some minor works which would normally fall under permitted development can be more restricted in these areas. If your property sits within one of these areas, particularly close to the Priory, Quay, High Street or another historic setting, it is worth checking the BCP Council conservation area guidance before making a major change to the appearance of an entrance.
Away from the historic centre, the requirements can be very different. A modern detached property near Burton or a suburban home between Purewell and Somerford may have considerably more freedom when it comes to contemporary colours, larger glazed sections or minimalist hardware.
